The aim of the visit was not only to visit the wood processing company, but also to meet board members and the Wood Processors Association and discuss the most urgent issues.

Together with Andrius Zimnickas, director of UAB Juodeliai, and Juozupas Zimnickas, director general of UAB Juodeliai, Mr Klovas and Mr Visalga visited a manufacturing unit of the company located in the village of Jūrė. The chancellor of the Ministry of the Environment was showed around the storage area for logs and production facilities by the managers and was able to inspect the working conditions of employees. Mr Klovas was interested in the annual output of logs processed by UAB Juodeliai and sourcing of raw materials. The guests were pleased to hear that the vast majority of timber is sourced from Lithuanian state-owned forests.

After visiting the manufacturing unit of the company, guests and managers of the company continued their meeting at the head office of UAB Juodeliai in Marijampolė. The discussion was also joined by A. Kavaliauskas and S. Astrauskas, representatives of the Wood Processors Association. The discussion focused on the new electronic wood trading procedure. The most urgent issue was the problem of ascending price long-term and half-year auctions. The managers of UAB Juodeliai and representatives of the Wood Processors Association suggested carrying out auctions not by open ascending price auction, but by sealed first-price auction.

During the meeting, problems related to biofuel were also discussed. Mr Klovas promised that the Ministry of the Environment would attempt to prevent timber suitable for processing being used for firewood. Assurances were also given to support only biofuel boiler units suitable for burning not only firewood, but also waste and straw.

The meeting was useful for all parties. In order to progress in the field of wood processing, further cooperation is expected in the future among the representatives of the government, producers, and associations.

For 18 years already, as much as 60% of the pallet blanks produced by the company comply with the requirements of EPAL standards. It is not expected that the production of pallet blanks according to the European standards under the licence issued by the EPAL certification body will change the share of EUR pallet blanks produced.

EPAL membership will facilitate the exchange of information between UAB Juodeliai and other pallet producers and ensure smooth communication and cooperation processes. Officially recognised compliance with EPAL standards and requirements will enable the company to satisfy the needs of individual clients in a more effective manner. EPAL membership is also a significant step forward for UAB Juodeliai, which is seeking to comply with the highest standards and is oriented towards the production of premium quality products.

The first of these is the Akmenynai Sawmill, which was opened in 1994 in the village of Akmenynai in Kalvarija Municipality. The sawmill, which occupies an area of approximately one hectare, currently employs nearly 90 people. The volume of production of the Akmenynai Sawmill is approximately 30,000 m3 of pallet wood per year.

In 2000, the company purchased a new sawmill—the Jūrė Sawmill in the village of Jūrė in Kazlų Ruda Municipality. In 2007, this sawmill was reconstructed and upgraded and is now over three times larger than the Akmenynai Sawmill. The Jūrė Sawmill occupies an area of approximately 3.6 hectares and employs nearly 100 people. This modern sawmill produces an average of 48,000 m3 of pallet wood per year.

The two sawmills of UAB Juodeliai produce approximately 78,000 m3 of wood products per year. Pallet wood is produced from deciduous and coniferous tree logs. The two sawmills process approximately 156,000 m3 of wood per year: approximately 96,000 m3 is processed by the Jūrė Sawmill and approximately 60,000 m3 is processed by the Akmenynai Sawmill.

In March, the company produced the greatest volumes of wood for pallets in its entire 18-year history: the divisions of the company produced 7,400 m3 of wood for pallets. These record results were achieved thanks to the renovation and upgrade of the Jūrė production facilities. The assurance of a sufficient supply of logs was one more reason for the success.

The achievements of the Sales Department were as good as those of the production facilities. The volume of wooden products sold exceeded 7,200 m3. A record number of trucks—246—was used to transport the products. The increasing number of foreign clients makes us even more optimistic when planning our activity in April.
Although the production of pallet wood continues to grow, quality and flawless customer care remain the priority for UAB Juodeliai. The success of the company’s operations depends directly on the quality of our products and the number of satisfied clients.

This fair provided our company with an opportunity to present itself to the target group of potential employees and trainees, to reinforce its image of an attractive and reliable employer and partner, to expand our database of potential candidate employees, and to find some required employees and trainees. This year, a stand of UAB Juodeliai was also present among the 89 participating companies. Our company is growing and is looking for new, promising employees.

This was the first time UAB Juodeliai took part in such a fair. We are delighted with the results and intend to participate next year as well. According to employees of the company who attended KTU Career Days 2012, the event was highly successful and its results were impressive. This is why the participation of UAB Juodeliai in the fair may become a tradition.

Representatives of UAB Juodeliai, which is one of the largest wood processing companies in Lithuania , also attended KTU Ingenium, which was held for the fourth time already. The core of this event is an intellectual game that unites various people—students and representatives of different companies and Kaunas University of Technology—on one team. At the end of the event, the company representatives evaluate the participants and select three award winners. It should be mentioned however that actually all participants are winners because just the fact that they passed the selection process proves that they are the best and most active students at Kaunas University of Technology. This event is an excellent opportunity for companies to find some potential promising employees. The members of the UAB Juodeliai team are delighted that, along with the main activity of the company—the production of pallet wood—they can keep close contacts with the academic community, take part in various socially oriented events, and personally meet some potential employees.

The company participates in the “Subsidised Employment” project organised by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour. While participating in the project, UAB Juodeliai has become one of the companies that employs the largest number of people in the areas of the highest unemployment, i.e. the districts of Akmenynai and Jūrė, where the wood processing divisions of UAB Juodeliai are located. The internet site of the Lithuanian Labour Exchange regularly announces information about job vacancies in the company. Non-subsidised workers promoted by the labour exchange are also employed. In January, UAB Juodeliai produced 6,000 m³ of products and planned to use their maximum capacity in February to produce over 7,000 m³ of wood for pallets.

At the end of last week however, a Siberian anticyclone resulted in extreme cold in Lithuania. In some areas of the country, the temperature dropped below -30 ̊C. The extreme conditions forced us to adjust our production plans: the operation of the Jūrė sawmill was suspended earlier than planned for scheduled repair, while the productivity of the Akmenynai sawmill was reduced by approximately 20% in order to protect the equipment.

According to meteorologists, the extremely cold weather, which reached its peak last weekend, is likely to gradually become milder. By the first half of next week, we plan to start up the Jūrė sawmill, and in the second half of the week both the Jūrė and Akmenynai sawmills should be using all their production capacity. We plan to produce approximately 5,000 m³ of wood for pallets in February.

The impact of the natural conditions has some positive aspects as well: the scheduled repair of the equipment in the Jūrė sawmill will enable to ensure the precise dimensions of wood for pallets, reduce the quantity of products kept at the warehouse, and increase the quantity of logs available. All this will allow the company to be even more flexible in satisfying clients’ needs.

These indexes are relevant for the wood processing companies purchasing controlled raw materials, i.e. round wood, which should be checked at a later stage under the company‘s inspection programme.

The newest ICC table shows that New Zealand, Denmark and Finland received the highest ratings (countries with the lowest level of corruption). Somalia and North Korea are at the bottom of this table. Compared with 2010, the value of the ICC in Lithuania, Costa Rica and Oman dropped down by 5 points. The value of the ICC in Lithuania dropped from 5.0 (in 2010) to 4.8 (in 2011). Despite all efforts, according to the values of the ICC and the position of FSC®, the risk level of purchasing illegally cut wood is still high in 9 EU countries – Bulgaria, Check Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia.

The wood providers who sell the controlled raw material will re-launch the checks on wood-felling locations under the company’s inspection programme, as they did in 2010, when the ICC value in Lithuania was 4.9. The wood processing company UAB Juodeliai confirms that it purchases only FSC® certified or legally cut wood, thus ensuring a sustainable use of natural resources.

The company’s turnover increased to LTL 40 million, an increase of approximately 33 per cent compared to 2010. Production volume went up approximately 15 per cent and totalled 68,500 m³.

In 2011, Juodeliai UAB expanded its Sales Department, which now has 5 employees. The department can be proud that the number of clients increased as much as 125 per cent compared to 2010. The management of the company hopes that thanks to the good work, effort, and cooperation of all employees its objectives will also be achieved in 2012. The company expects its turnover in 2012 to reach LTL 50 million.
