Marijampolė – Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2018

For this special year of Lithuania celebrating 100 years of its state restoration, Marijampolė was chosen to be the Lithuanian Capital of Culture. The Lithuanian Capital of Culture project has been organised since 2010. In 2017, this title was bestowed to the Klaipėda City Municipality while Marijampolė will pass it on to Rokiškis in 2019.

The programme consists of four categories integrating music, art and literature, media art, and tourism and urban areas. During this year, the programme will offer a variety of events which will reveal the history of the city, changes of cultural traditions, cultural diversity, and will introduce the ever-changing city of Marijampolė and its people.

Some of the programme events will extend not only beyond the walls of the city but also the territory of Lithuania because certain projects will be implemented by Lithuanians abroad and Marijampolė natives living in foreign countries. The programme will capture attention with the names of notable artists. One of them is Ray, a well-known Lithuanian artist living in New York for a quarter of a century, who will present an exhibition of his most recent works. Another guest of the programme is Violeta Urmanavičiūtė-Urmana, a world-famous opera soloist, who will give a concert with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra.

During the cultural year, Marijampolė will host the known and new art festivals, celebrations, exhibitions and other cultural happenings. UAB Juodeliai, a wood processing company, will support the implementation of the project Marijampolė – Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2018 as its general sponsor.
